The practice involves a medical practitioner or head of the family extracting the female genitalia, with the help of blades, cutters, or other such tools. The activity rarely involves use of anaesthesia, sterile equipment or, consent of the individual. The practise is usually performed in the period between birth and puberty, but cases of adult and pre-adult FGM have also been reported.
